At Home

“The Eye of the Glass”

I was sooo tired today due to lack of sleep the last three nights and after a full day at work today.

The lack of sleep is pretty much a combination of a two-year old waking up several times throughout the night (as a result of a cold and a little bit of fever) and then the FIFA World Cup in Football which is broadcast in Australia between 9:30pm and 6:00am.

So when I came home from work today the last thing on my mind was making photographs.

The thought of trying to find a creative photograph was exhausting. All I wanted to do was lie down and sleep. I was blank and just walked around aimlessly trying to ‘see’ something.

Then suddenly I remembered how I had looked through the bottom of a beer glass the other day and liked the random shapes of the lines of our blinds when seen through bottom of the glass. However that discovery was made midday with plenty of light in the apartment and the idea wouldn’t work for a shot after dark.

So instead I pointed my glass and camera directly up against a light source and experimented with many different points of focus.

I was completely in awe with what I saw and for the next 25 minutes I made 69 different shots through a couple of different glasses held up against the same light source. I forgot all about being tired and renewed energy flowed through my body. I was transfixed and experienced an ideal state of mind for creative output similar to what I experienced when making Beyond Beautiful the other day.

I was ‘in the zone’.

It’s much too early to pick personal favourites from this project, but I think this image would make it onto the shortlist.
